House Edge in the Craps Game
The house earns a percentage on every bet that is made at
the craps table. This is how they pat for the overheads of running a
casino. However, the choice of how much you want to pay for the privelege of playing is entirely up to you. At craps you can almost pay
for "free" when you make the proper odds bet, or you can pay a large vig
when you bet on one of the proposition bets (such as one-roll any 7).

In craps there is a big difference between 10 to 1 and 10 for 1. For
example, when you are paid at 5 to 1, you'll be paid $5 and the $1
original wager. In the case of $5 for $1, you get paid $4 only, which
includes your original dollar bet. This really reduces the true payout
to 4 to 1.
You should avoid any "for" bets you see at the craps table - all they do
is give the house an extra percentage toward their edge.
Player advantage
You do have some advantages over the house. For one thing, you can
always quit when you want to. Also, you decide how much to bet, and
when, and where. You can skip bets, and you can bet big or little, and
the house must cover you every time. The key to playing craps is to play
smart. Obtaining knowledge will give you the ability.
